General Sociology Degrees: General Info
A bachelor's or master's degree program in General Sociology teaches the student how to examine the organizations, cultures, groups and institutions that make up society -- both today and in the past. It also trains them to analyze societal effects, such as epidemics, crime, culture and politics, and how they affect the various nations and cultures around the world and within the United States. A typical college course in general sociology will offer classes in organizational analysis, gerontology, sociology, criminology, public policy and administration, global analysis and urban politics. A myriad of other topics that relate to sociology are studied as well. A bachelor's degree is a starting point in sociology but many students today go on to earn their master's degree or doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D).
