Duties of a Medical Office Receptionist
Medical office receptionists are the public face of many hospitals, doctor's offices, private clinics, insurance providers and other health care providers. Their main duties include greeting and welcoming patients, scheduling appointments, processing payments and filing financial and patient paperwork. These are similar to the responsibilities of office receptionists in other industries. In a medical office however, a different standard of care and professionalism must be maintained. Medical office workers must be sensitive to the privacy and ethics issues of their patients. They must have excellent communication and people skills, along with the ability to multitask efficiently and to coordinate a large amount of information. For example, a medical office receptionist may introduce a patient to his or her doctor, file their insurance claim, contact an outside laboratory to perform tests, relay the results to a consulting physician and then schedule a follow-up meeting for the patient, all in the matter of a few hours. The health care industry can be challenging and isn't for everyone, but many medical office receptionists find the work difficult, but rewarding.
