Duties of a Histotechnologist

Histotechnologists are medical laboratory professionals who specialize in the study of the microscopic structures of human tissue. They prepare microscope slides from surgically collected samples of tissue using a variety of techniques including freezing and staining. Histotechnologists work closely with physicians, surgeons and nurses in treating patients with a variety of ailments. Generally, histotechnologists must be professionally licensed and have completed a specialized course of study that includes significant professional experience as an assistant to a licensed histotechnologist. Many community colleges offer courses of study specifically designed to prepare students for careers in histotechnology. In 2006, histotechnologists earned a median hourly salary of over $21, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
