Criminalistics Degrees: General Info
Criminalistic experts spend their time between working in the field searching for and collecting crime scene evidence and in the crime lab preserving and interpreting that evidence. Crime scene investigators work together with other law enforcement personnel such as police officers and detectives. Their job goes beyond what a forensic lab technician does. Many crime scene investigators specialize in a particular area of evidence such as blood spatter or profiling. They can be employed by the local police force, sheriff's office, state police or on by a federal organization, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, www.bls.gov, states that the median annual pay is $58,260. The job outlook is good for both detectives and criminal investigators and is expected to grow faster than average.

A master's degree program typically takes one to two years to complete and serves as preparation for employment of doctoral studies.
