What is Phlebotomy?
Phlebotomy is the act of drawing blood from a vein. This is a common practice in most hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and other health care establishments. Drawn blood can be used in transfusions or can be tested for diagnostic purposes. Drawing blood is a simple procedure and can be performed by phlebotomists, who are trained specifically to draw blood from patients. Part of their job is to calm nervous patients, including children, and to draw the blood as quickly and painlessly as possible. They must also draw the blood into the correct vial, as different tests require different collection methods. Phlebotomists can be trained in an associate's degree program, although in many locations they are simply trained on the job. Phlebotomists often earn between $8 and $12 per hour, depending on their job duties and their employer.
