Medical and Health Records Technology Careers: General Info

Most hospitals, doctors offices and other health care providers are using modern technology to digitize, organize, search and secure their obsolete patient records. Even those with previous experience in medical and health records technology may need to learn new skills and techniques in an associate's degree program or in a non-degree career certification. In these programs, students study modern computer scanning technologies and optical character recognition (OCR) software packages. These are the technologies that make large scale digitization of patient charts and records possible. As part of their training, medical record technologists must also study professional ethics and legal issues related to medical record keeping. Most medical records technologists interact with doctors, nurses and even patients on a daily basis and must have excellent people skills as well as outstanding communication skills and the ability to multitask efficiently.
