Biology Teacher Education: General Info
Combining a love of biology with a love of teaching can result in a rewarding career as a biology teacher. Elementary level teachers can take a special course on how to teach biology to children in that grade level. These classes would focus on lab equipment, biology basics and how to present the material to younger children. These teachers would have earned their degree in education, not in biology. To teach at the secondary level, one would need to earn a degree in biology while completing required education courses to earn a teaching certificate. Those teaching at a post-secondary level will need to have a graduate degree in biology. Courses in biology cover topics related to living things including animal biology, plant biology, zoology, marine biology, environmental science, basic chemistry, life science and microbiology.
