ESL and Bilingual Teacher Education: General Info
More and more immigrants are coming into the United States unable to speak English. This creates an ever increasing need for English as second language (ESL) teachers. Adults need to be able speak English in order to be able to work and live in the United States.Children need to be able to understand and speak English to do well in school. ESL and bilingual teacher education prepares teachers not only to teach individuals to speak English but to understand the basic mechanics behind the written language. And while many ESL teachers focus on the Spanish speaking population they are certainly not limited to that. There are large groups of Middle Eastern, Korean and Chinese cultures needing to learn English. Obviously an ESL teacher must be fluent in a language other than English. A bachelor's degree and teaching certificate may also be needed.
