Duties and Responsibilities of a Nurse Practitioner
Nurse practitioners have duties and responsibilities that extend beyond those of a registered nurse. In many states, nurse practitioners are able to work without the supervision of a physician and may even write prescriptions. They often assist doctors on complicated procedures and consult on difficult cases, in addition to seeing their own patients and performing administrative duties. Nurse practitioners are often employed in rural areas, where a full-time physician is either unneeded or too costly. Urban care centers with high patient volumes also rely on nurse practitioners as a lower cost and similarly capable alternative to physicians. Nurse practitioners must complete additional training in pharmacology, pathology and treatment and diagnose techniques beyond what is required of registered nurses. Virtually all nurse practitioners begin their careers as registered nurses before pursuing the additional education and training that makes them an incredibly valuable asset to any health care provider.
Associate Degree Programs: General Info
Associate programs are two year degree programs devoted to a particular area of learning. Associate programs are often pursued by those wishing to enter into a certain career field but who do want to take the four years needed for a bachelor's degree. For example, those interested in law but not wanting to enroll in a graduate program to become a lawyer can earn an associate's degree. They then can become paralegals, legal assistants or office managers. An associate's degree can be earned by those who don't yet know what they want to do and often covers general studies which can transfer into a higher degree later.
