Up until a few decades ago, mental health conditions were treated as personality defects, not the true medical ailments that they are. Mental health counseling therapists work with patients suffering from depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa and other mental health conditions. Most therapists work for a hospital, non-profit organization or operate their own private practices. Related positions are also available in education, criminal justice and human resources. Most therapists hold at least a master's degree in psychology or a similar field, with many professionals earning their doctoral degree.
