General Clinical Psychology Degrees
General Clinical Psychology programs focus on the study of human behavior, the mind and what drives us to do what we do. The goal of a clinical psychologist is to provide answers when individuals deviate from what is considered normal and to help them cope with stress and mental illness. Classes focus on learning evaluation and diagnostic techniques, personal appraisal and assessment, psychology, pharmopsychology, child and adolescent therapy, reporting, behavior modification and psychopathology. Industry regulations and ethics are also studied. The end goal is the knowledge to pass the licensing board test required by the state where the student resides. Getting a seal of approval from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) is another goal after earning your bachelor's, master's or Ph. D degree. You can also chose to narrow your focus within the clinical psychology field. Health psychology deals with prevention and coping with illness while neuropsychology examines the relationship between behavior and the brain. Geropsychology is a specialty dealing with psychological issues that affect the elderly.
Doctoral Degree Programs: General Information
Doctoral degree programs are the most advanced courses of study offered by most American universities. Some programs offer simultaneous master's and doctoral degrees, while others require students to complete a master's degree first. Other programs may be started directly following completion of the undergraduate degree. Doctoral degree programs are made up of courses, often called seminars, where topics are investigated at a much greater depth than in undergraduate classes. Many doctoral candidates teach undergraduate classes or assist professors in preparing for their classes. Most doctoral degree programs also require completion of a dissertation. A dissertation is an extended essay that requires extensive research and exhaustive preparation. In order to complete the program, the candidate must submit his or her dissertation to faculty members for review.
